This program is a must for ski mountaineers.  Climb a Cascade classic and ski down it!  Mount Baker is one of the best ski mountaineering objectives in the Cascades, offering long descents up to 8,000′ vertical feet, exciting glaciated terrain, spectacular views, and quite commonly, smooth corn snow.

3 Day Program

We typically take 3 days, on either the Coleman-Deming route on the north side of the mountain, or the Squak Glacier on the south side. Our first day we approach camp, and spend some time on skills training and review: ice axe arrest, roped travel, and techniques for skiing on a glacier. On day 2 or 3 we launch for the summit (depending on weather conditions). Both routes involve crevassed terrain, and 35°+ degree turns on the Roman Wall.

Single Day Program

While no easy task, a one day ski ascent of Mt. Baker is a highly rewarding ski mountaineering objective for strong backcountry skiers. Moving fast and light with just day packs, we’ll cover up to 8,000′ vertical feet of terrain, up and down, in 10-12 hours.  Route options include the Coleman-Deming, Easton Glacier, and the Squak Glacier.  Skiing Baker in a day requires a very high level of physical fitness. If you are unsure of your abilities, we recommend our 3-day program.

Participants should be advanced skiers or riders, comfortable in a variety of snow conditions on black diamond terrain. Snowboarders should be on a splitboard touring setup and have experience using their equipment.
